Acute Migraine Treatments

To simplify things a bit we have separated acute migraine treatments into four categories - Triptans, Other Acute Treatments (non-triptans), Devices, and Office Based Rescue Treatments.

There are over 20 excellent acute treatments for migraine headache.

Triptan Migraine Treatments

Triptans are the most frequent prescription medication prescribed to treat migraines.  Because they were so revolutionary and because there are so many different forms available, Dr. Loftus has devotes  a separate page on the website for just this one class of medications. Other Acute Migraine Treatments

Fortunately, we now have a lot of FDA approved treatments for acute migraine that are not triptans.  This includes 2 prescription NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories), 2 CGRP receptor antagonist, 1 5HT-1A agonist, as well as multiple forms of dihydroergotamine. Electronic Devices to Treat Migraine Headaches

There are 5 non-invasive electronic devices that are approved by the FDA to treat acute migraine headache.  Dr. Loftus is familiar with all of them. Learn more about Devices to treat Migraines

Office Rescue Treatments

When at home treatments fail, Dr. Loftus offers rescue treatments to his current patients who feel that they would otherwise need to go to an ER or urgent care.  These non-narcotic treatments consist of both injectable or intravenous therapies (that could be offered in an ER but rarely are) as well as procedures performed by some headache specialists.  While Dr. Loftus does not maintain after hour options, it turns out most patients presenting to an ER for a migraine have waited 3 days before seeking help.  Waiting to get help for a severe headache is only appropriate for patients that have long standing migraines. If you have never had a severe headache before and suddenly have the worst headache of your life, you should go to an ER and get checked.   Learn more about office rescue treatments
