Classifying Requirements
The current International Headache Society classification {Cephalgia 2004;24 (Suppl 1)} for episodic tension-type headache requires:
A. At least 10 headaches fulfilling criteria B-D, but less than 15 headache days/month
B. Headaches lasting from 30 minutes to 7 days
C. At least two of the following:
- Pressing/tightly (non-pulsating) quality
- Patient able to maintain mild or moderate activity (i.e. not severe – incapacitating)
- Bilateral location
- Headache not aggravated by walking stairs, similar routine or physical activity
D. Both of the following:
- No nausea or vomiting related to headache
- Only one of the following:
- Photophobia (light is uncomfortable)
- Phonophobia (noise is uncomfortable)

Dr. Loftus is Board Certified in Headache Medicine as well as Neurology. In private practice since 1994, Dr. Loftus’ practice has gotten busier and he has decided to concentrate his practice in areas that he can make a particular difference compared to other neurologist. Therefore, Dr. Loftus has chosen to focus his neurology practice on headaches & head pain, headaches during pregnancy, and hyperhidrosis. In the spring of 2006, Dr. Loftus relocated his practice from the Texas Medical Center to Bellaire, just 5 miles west. He has been named a Texas Monthly “Super Doctor” and an H Texas magazine “Top Doctor” multiple times.
