Episodic Tension-Type Headache Criteria

Classifying Requirements

The current International Headache Society classification {Cephalgia 2004;24 (Suppl 1)} for episodic tension-type headache requires:

A. At least 10 headaches fulfilling criteria B-D, but less than 15 headache days/month
B. Headaches lasting from 30 minutes to 7 days
C. At least two of the following:

  • Pressing/tightly (non-pulsating) quality
  • Patient able to maintain mild or moderate activity (i.e. not severe – incapacitating)
  • Bilateral location
  • Headache not aggravated by walking stairs, similar routine or physical activity

D. Both of the following:

  • No nausea or vomiting related to headache
  • Only one of the following:
    • Photophobia (light is uncomfortable)
    • Phonophobia (noise is uncomfortable)

In private practice since 1994, Dr. Loftus’ practice has gotten busier and he has decided to concentrate his practice in areas that he can make a particular difference compared to other neurologist. Therefore, Dr. Loftus has chosen to focus his neurology practice on headaches & head painheadaches during pregnancy, and hyperhidrosis. In the spring of 2006, Dr. Loftus relocated his practice from the Texas Medical Center to Bellaire, just 5 miles west. He has been named a Texas Monthly “Super Doctor” and an H Texas magazine “Top Doctor” multiple times.
