What you should know about getting migraine treatment during pregnancy
Women have come into Dr. Loftus' clinic desperate because they are having daily, excruciating migraine headaches and their OBs have told them they need to tough it out for the health and safety of their fetus. The medical community (including Dr. Loftus) want to avoid putting any chemicals in the mother's body that may harm the fetus. When women call many neurologists to schedule an appointment for migraines during pregnancy they are told the physician will see pregnant women. When they get there for the appointment, they are not prescribed anything to help alleviate or prevent their migraine pain. This is due to a combination of the fear of being sued if there is a poor fetal outcome and from a lack of knowledge about many migraine therapies by general neurologists. There are many migraine treatments that are safe for the fetus. Dr. Loftus discusses these options on the related pages in the various phases of headache treatment during pregnancy.
You Can Choose to Just Suffer with Migraines during Pregnancy
You are an adult. For your first pregnancy choosing to suffer with migraines and not receive treatment is a choice. This option is fine assuming the patient recognizes that it is a choice they are making.
When it is a second or third pregnancy and other children are at home who need childcare, many times suffering is no longer an option. That is why Dr. Loftus often sees women for their second or third pregnancies more often than their first pregnancy. Don't let this be you.
